Expert AC Troubleshooting and Optimization

Some rooms in our house are too hot (or cold). Can we fix this? Absolutely! There are a variety of causes for airflow issues. Sometimes, the source of the problem is a dirty air filter, coil, and/or blower. If any of those components are dirty, it can result in reduced air flow passing through the air handler and cause the air to die off in the outer branches of the duct system.

Another possibility is that the ductwork has come loose. A minor reattachment repair can solve the problem if this is the case. In many situations, there are duct design issues. A James Thomas Heating and Cooling professional should be called to troubleshoot the problem in these cases.

Solutions can range from simple air balancing to duct replacement to advanced climate control systems, such as a ductless mini split zone system.

How often should my home’s air ducts be cleaned and inspected?

In most homes, air duct cleaning and inspection once every three years are sufficient. The type of AC filter you are using and the frequency of maintenance can have a big impact on the duration between cleanings. The purchase of a good-quality air cleaner will also protect your heating and air conditioning equipment, duct system, and home. Scheduled air conditioning maintenance will extend the life of the equipment and increase its efficiency.

Call us today to learn how quality AC repairs and regular maintenance can improve your system’s efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

James Thomas Icon

Common AC cooling problems include dirty air filters, low refrigerant levels, frozen evaporator coils, malfunctioning compressors, or thermostat issues. Change filters monthly during summer and call a professional if problems persist after basic troubleshooting. Regular maintenance prevents most cooling issues.

Signs of low refrigerant include warm air from vents, ice forming on indoor/outdoor units, and energy bills increasing 20% or more. Refrigerant should only be handled by qualified technicians for both safety and legal compliance purposes. Never attempt DIY refrigerant repairs.

Turn off your AC immediately and call a qualified technician. Strange noises can indicate serious problems that could escalate and become more expensive to repair if ignored, potentially leading to costly component damage. Continuing the operation may worsen the problem significantly.

Change AC filters every 1-3 months, or more frequently if you have pets, allergies, or live in dusty areas. 4-inch specialty filters can last up to 6 months, depending on the air environment and system usage. Check filters monthly during peak seasons.

AC repair warning signs include weak airflow, unusual noises, frequent cycling, water leaks, high humidity levels, and increased energy bills. Schedule repair service immediately if you notice any of these symptoms to prevent more expensive damage and system failures.

Establish a relationship with one trusted HVAC company for the fastest response times. Most HVAC companies prioritize repeat, loyal customers above someone calling multiple companies for the best service and fastest response time. Building relationships ensures priority scheduling during emergencies.

Excessive moisture from rain, condensation, and humidity causes AC corrosion. Another surprising source is pet urine—create barriers preventing pets from accessing units to prevent premature corrosion and component failure. Regular cleaning helps prevent corrosion damage to coils and components.

James Thomas Heating and Cooling is such a wonderful professional company. It is by far the superior HVAC company in the area, is still family owned and operated and is super service oriented. We just had a motor go out in our outside unit and they had one of their lead technicians, Scottie, repair the unit even with very slippery mountain roads to contend with. We are back toasty warm in the cabin. I give James Thomas my highest level of referral.

Just posting about the great service I received from our HVAC group James Thomas heating and plumbing. They go far above to make sure we are taken care of, and love their crew that services are equipment. Scotty did a great favor getting over ahead of schedule and working on our unit. Always kind and courteous and keeps our system running effectively. Thank you!
Christian did an outstanding job. He demonstrated excellent knowledge, workmanship, people skills and pride. James Thomas and team are are available 24/7. They are the best in town.
Scotty was at our home ahead of his scheduled time. He was courteous and and answered all my questions to my satisfaction. It took him a little over 3 hours to replace a leaking condenser coil in a Rheem outside unit. The system is now cooling as expected. All in all, a very professional job by a top notch technician. My only complaint is that it took a little over 2 weeks from the time the problem was diagnosed to when the job was completed. Outdoor temps were 80+ degrees F during this time.
