Does an Expired Warranty Mean It’s Time to Replace Your AC?

An expired warranty changes who pays for a repair. It tells you nothing new about the condition of your equipment. The metal in your yard does not know what date it is.

That distinction matters, because the warranty question is the one I get asked most often on service calls, and the answer surprises people.

What actually decides whether to replace an air conditioner is the age of the system, the refrigerant it runs on, whether a major component has failed, and how the repair cost compares to a new unit. A warranty that has run out belongs in the math only as a line item, since it means you now pay for parts you would have gotten free.

I’m James Thomas. I have worked in heating and air for over forty years, starting in tinsmithing and moving through commercial and residential installation, service, and management. Here is what I tell homeowners who call about a warranty that just expired.

What Your Warranty Actually Covers

A warranty covers a part. It does not cover the repair.

Manufacturers are direct about this in their own documentation. Trane’s warranty terms state that coverage applies to the cost of parts that fail due to a manufacturer defect, and specifically not to the labor required to install them. American Standard publishes the same terms, and the major brands we work with follow the same structure.

That gap is where the money lives. On a failed compressor, the part might run $1,200 and be fully covered, while the labor to recover refrigerant, swap the unit, evacuate the system, and recharge it runs another $800 to $1,500 and comes out of your pocket. I have watched customers learn on the spot that they owe most of the bill on a repair they were told was under warranty.

Labor coverage comes from the contractor who installed the system, not from the factory. A typical workmanship warranty runs one to two years. That is a fair question to ask any contractor quoting you a new system, and the answer tells you something about how confident they are in their own installation. The Registration Window

This next part decides how much coverage you actually have, and it is settled in the first two months you own the system.

Most major manufacturers offer two tiers of parts coverage. The base warranty runs about five years and applies automatically. The registered warranty runs about ten years, and you only get it if the system is registered within roughly sixty days of installation.

The State of Georgia recently passed a law that requires manufacturers to offer the same warranty to all Georgia buyers whether their purchase was registered or not. That is good news for anyone purchasing a system on 1/1/26 or after.

We handle registration for every system we install. If someone else installed yours, it is worth checking your status directly with the manufacturer using the serial number. I have had customers learn in year seven that they had been running on five-year coverage the whole time.

One useful thing to know: parts coverage follows the equipment, not the company that installed it. If your original installer has retired or gone out of business, the warranty is still yours, and any licensed contractor can process a covered part.

What Actually Decides Whether to Replace

With the warranty question settled, these are the four things I look at on a service call.

  • Age. Most central systems run reliably for ten to fifteen years. Past that, components have simply done their work. Electrical connections oxidize, bearings lose lubrication, and coils accumulate the fine debris that reduces heat transfer.
  • Refrigerant. The EPA phased out R-22 as of 2020. Servicing one of these systems now depends on recycled stock, which has become expensive and scarce. If you are seeing signs of low refrigerant on an R-22 system, that repair is money spent on equipment with a short runway. Current systems use R-454B or R-32 under the AIM Act phase-down.
  • Major component failure. A burned-out compressor is the clearest case for replacement, and it is one of several reasons a unit stops cooling. When a compressor fails, it can push acid and metal debris through the refrigerant lines and contaminate the coils, which means the repair is rarely just the compressor.
  • Parts availability. Manufacturers discontinue components for older models, and at some point a system becomes unrepairable regardless of what you are willing to spend. That is a much more real deadline than a warranty date.

Running the Numbers

Two rules of thumb circulate in this trade, and both are useful.

The first multiplies the system’s age in years by the repair estimate in dollars. If the result clears $5,000, replacement usually makes better financial sense. A twelve-year-old system needing an $800 repair gives you $9,600, which is well past the line. A four-year-old unit facing a $350 repair gives you $1,400, and that one is an easy repair.

The second compares the repair quote to the price of a new system. If a repair costs more than half of a replacement, put the money toward the new unit.

The Question I Get Most in Blue Ridge

A lot of the homes we serve sit empty for part of the year. Second homes, cabins, and short-term rentals across Fannin, Gilmer, and Union counties all run on a different calculation, and the standard advice does not fit them well.

Runtime hours accumulate slowly in a house nobody is living in, so a fifteen-year-old system in a seasonal cabin may have far less wear than a ten-year-old system in a full-time residence. Age alone tells you less here.

Humidity is the bigger concern. A system that runs poorly while the house is empty lets moisture build in a closed cabin through a North Georgia summer, and that shows up as musty air, warped trim, and mold on the return grille when the owner arrives in October. Keeping a property dry between visits matters as much as keeping it cool, which is why humidity control is part of how we size these systems.

For rental owners, there is also the guest problem. A failure in an occupied cabin during peak season costs a cancelled booking and a review, which usually exceeds the price difference between fixing an aging system and replacing it. Owners managing properties remotely often decide to replace a year earlier than a full-time resident would, and that decision holds up.

What a Replacement Costs

Three things are worth knowing about that number.

Pairing the new outdoor unit with a matched indoor evaporator coil is what lets the system reach its rated SEER2 efficiency. A new condenser working against an old coil delivers neither the efficiency nor the lifespan you paid for.

If your furnace is also twelve to fifteen years old, replacing both at once usually lowers total labor cost and keeps the system properly matched.

Proper sizing decides how the system performs for its whole life. Should I Replace My AC as Soon as the Warranty Expires?

No. An expired warranty means you now pay for parts that would have been covered, which changes the cost of a future repair. The condition of the equipment is what should drive the decision, and that comes down to age, refrigerant, component health, and repair history.

Does My Warranty Cover the Labor on a Repair?

Usually not. Manufacturer warranties cover parts that fail due to a defect. Labor comes from the installing contractor’s workmanship warranty, or from an extended plan you purchased separately. Ask any contractor how many years of labor coverage they include.

How Do I Find Out Whether My System Was Registered?

Contact the manufacturer with the model and serial numbers from the outdoor unit. They can confirm your registration status and your coverage end date. How Long Should an Air Conditioner Last in North Georgia?

Ten to fifteen years for most systems with regular maintenance. Seasonal properties often reach the longer end of that range because the equipment runs fewer hours, though age still catches up with the electrical and mechanical components eventually.

Is It Worth Repairing a System That Uses R-22?

Rarely, the repair involves refrigerant. Recycled R-22 has become expensive and hard to source since production ended in 2020. A minor electrical repair on an otherwise healthy R-22 system can still make sense, and a refrigerant leak generally points toward replacement.
